Santa Monica, CA 60,000 square feet IMAX Corporation commissioned HLW, with Scott Profeta asthe senior project designer, to create a new corporate headquarters and production facility that would redefine the company as a serious player in the film industry. Although design and construction of a new facility was possible within the client’s twelve-month schedule, the city’s approval process would add at least another year. A simple remodel of an underused warehouse, however, would quickly move through the Building Department without an environmental analysis or extensive design review. As defined by the City of Santa Monica, a simple remodel must maintain at least fifty percent of the existing exterior walls. Because of the practical importance of these walls, the project design was conceived around them - the old perimeter wall wraps the clearly expressed new program elements holding them together in a symbolic embrace. |
